Are Spiraling Thoughts Stressing You Out? Join the Paid Research Study on Emotion Regulation

Description of the Study on Emotion Regulation Paid Research Study

The paid research study on emotion regulation at the Teachers College, Columbia University is offering free online skills training as part of a research study. If you're between the ages of 18-65, fluent in English, and have access to a smartphone and the internet, you may be eligible to participate. Participants will receive compensation for various study components, including two in-person visits and online questionnaires over a 5-month period.

Participate in one of three 6-week online skills training programs designed to help you manage distress, which will involve completing exercises on an internet- and mobile-based platform.

Please note that these trainings are not considered therapy, so there may be no improvement or even a worsening of symptoms.

You’ll be asked to answer questions sent to your phone and complete questionnaires for compensation before, immediately after, and three months following the training.

Possible risks include temporary feelings of boredom, fatigue, or negative emotions like anxiety or frustration.

You’ll also complete an in-person lab visit (about 3 hours) before and after the training, during which you will wear electrodes (similar to stickers) on your head and body to record brain and body activity while completing computerized tasks with emotionally evocative images.

Possible risks for this visit include tenderness or redness at the electrode sites, temporary negative emotions, or general discomfort. There is also a minimal risk of electrical shock, which is lower than the risk associated with using a hairdryer or toaster.

If You Qualify

This study aims to compare the effectiveness of three different skills training programs designed to help cope with distress: (1) attention skills training, (2) attention and reflective thought skills training, and (3) health and wellness skills training. Each program lasts 6 weeks, is self-directed, and conducted online with weekly coaching support.

If you qualify to participate, you will be randomly assigned to one of these three training programs. For research purposes, this assignment is made randomly, so you will have an equal 33.33% chance of being assigned to any one of the three programs.
