Paid Research Study, Lp(a) cholesterol research: The Hidden Cholesterol Risk, Pre-Screening for Elevated Levels

Updated: Feb 26

Smiling woman in a mint green sweater makes a heart shape with her hands. She stands against a pale gray background. Casual, warm mood.

What is Lp(a), Lipoprotein(a)?

Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a) cholesterol research, is a type of cholesterol that is not as widely recognized but can be harmful when levels are high. High Lp(a) can raise the risk of heart attacks and strokes, even in individuals who maintain a healthy lifestyle with good eating habits and regular exercise. Around 1 in 5 people have elevated Lp(a), and it tends to run in families. While there are no treatments currently approved to lower Lp(a), researchers are actively exploring new medications that might help reduce high levels of it.

Process and Procedures for Lipoprotein(a) Pre- Screening

Care Access is a research program focused on finding cures for Lipoprotein(a), a genetically inherited type of "bad" cholesterol. During the pre-screening phase, a clinical coordinator will explain the process and answer any questions you may have. Once the consent form is reviewed, you will sign it, and then two tubes of blood will be drawn for testing. The study includes five tests:

1. Cholesterol levels

2. Kidney function

3. Liver enzymes

4. Blood sugar levels

5. Lipoprotein(a) levels

The steps for pre-screening are as follows:

1. Sign up/sign in

2. Review and sign the consent and medical release form

3. Blood draw

4. Receive thank-you incentive pay

5. Schedule a call to discuss results (3 weeks)

Qualifications to do Pre-Screening

To participate in the Lipoprotein(a) pre-screening and study, the following eligibility requirements must be met:

1. You must be 18 years or older.

2. You must be able to read and understand English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Please note that the program currently only offers consent forms in these languages.

Compensation

As a thank-you for participating in the pre-screening phase of the Lipoprotein(a) study, participants will receive a one-time $45 Mastercard Visa gift card. Please note that there are rules associated with the pay card. For more information and further instructions, you can contact the team members involved in the study.

Spreading the Word

If you're interested in sharing the Lipoprotein(a) pre-screening and study with your friends, family, and community, there's a referral system in place. For every qualified referral you make to the program, you'll receive a $25 digital Visa gift card sent to the email on file. Please note that it can take 7 to 10 business days (not including holidays or weekends) for the gift card to be sent, and the referral must meet the qualifications.

To create your referral link, simply click the link below and enter your email. This will generate a blue referral link, which you can then share with your friends and family for them to complete the necessary form.

*This tool is not part of any formal research program. It is designed solely to serve as an educational resource for communities, providing valuable information about research processes and compensation. Its primary goal is to help individuals gain a better understanding of how research works, as well as the compensation structures that may be involved, without being tied to any specific study or program. This initiative aims to empower communities with knowledge, helping them navigate research-related topics with clarity and confidence.
